Barcelona to sign World Cup winner to replace struggling superstar

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann announced earlier this month that he’s leaving the Spanish giants at the end of the season to start a new chapter in his illustrious career.

Reports have suggested that the Frenchman could be set to join Barcelona in the summer. Griezmann was close to joining the Catalans a few seasons ago. However, he opted to sign a new contract at Atletico.

Antoine Griezmann to replace Coutinho at Barcelona?

Now though, after another trophyless season, Griezmann feels he has taken the club as far as they can go. He is now looking for a new challenge at a new club.

While he’s expected to join Barcelona in the summer, a number of Barca stars will have to make way first.

Among the players expected to leave the Catalans is Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho. However, Coutinho’s agent does not believe that Griezmann is being signed to replace Coutinho.

“It’s untrue that Griezmann is going to replace Philippe at Barcelona. I don’t know why they are saying that. I don’t know about that and that’s why I don’t want to talk anymore, but it’s false.”

Barcelona are expected to activate Griezmann’s release clause worth around £108m. In an order to fund that move, they are widely believed to be keen on offloading some of the deadweight. This includes Coutinho, who has struggled during his time at the Camp Nou.

Coutinho’s future in doubt

The Brazilian arrived on Spanish shores amid much hype following a £145m move from Liverpool. However, he has struggled to adapt to life at Barcelona, often being overshadowed by the likes of Ousmane Dembele and others.

He was even booed by the Barcelona fans for his dismal performances against his former club in the Champions League.

It remains to be seen if Coutinho is keen on staying at the club. If he is open to a move though, expect Barcelona to cash in.
