Chelsea defender David Luiz is all set to remain with the club for two more seasons after signing a contract extension recently.
Luiz’s current contract was set to expire at the end of the season. However, the Blues have acted quickly to tie him down to a new deal.
David Luiz to remain with Chelsea for two more seasons
Luiz has cemented his spot in the starting lineup under new manager Maurizio Sarri. While his defensive abilities have often come under fire, Luiz remains one of the most versatile centre-backs, capable of driving his team forward and also spreading play with accurate long balls to his strikers.
The Brazilian revealed that he’s always wanted to stay at Chelsea. This, despite rumours suggesting he was looking for a summer exit.
“I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay. I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player.”
Luiz has helped Chelsea to a top-four finish in the Premier League. He’s aided them in their quest for European glory, leading the Blues to the final of the Europa League.
He even scored a penalty in the decisive shootout victory over Frankfurt in the semifinals.
“It means a lot to reach another European final, and we still have the opportunity to finish in the top three of the Premier League this season and I will continue to do my best to help the team.”
On course to become a club legend
Luiz has spent close to a decade at the Stamford Bridge club in total. This is, in fact, his second stint at Chelsea after having been sold to PSG in between.
He has made a whopping 246 appearances for the club in the league and remains one of their most experienced players.
Coming to Chelsea, they have acted quickly to retain the core of the side in light of their impending transfer ban. Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have also put pen to paper on new deals earlier this year.
