Cristiano Ronaldo hails former coach for ‘making him feel special’

Former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has heaped praise on his former coach Zinedine Zidane for making him feel special during his time at the Bernabeu.

Zidane and Ronaldo enjoyed great success together at Los Blancos. The Frenchman’s arrival coincided with an upturn in fortunes for Real Madrid and Ronaldo.

Under Zidane, Madrid won three successive Champions League trophies, with Ronaldo playing a starring role in each of them.

However, the duo left the club in the summer of 2018, with Ronaldo moving to Juventus for €112million and Zidane taking a sabbatical.

Their departure affected the Spanish side quite drastically as they struggled to replicate the performances of previous seasons, clearly showing the impact the legendary duo had on the club.

“Zidane made me feel special”

Now, Ronaldo has heaped praise on Zidane, claiming he helped him a lot and made him grow as a player.

“The confidence that a player needs doesn’t only come from himself but also from the players around him and the coach. You need to feel like you are an important part of the group and Zidane made me feel special.
“He helped me a lot. I already had a lot of respect for him but working with him made me admire him more. That’s because of what he’s like as a person, how he talks, how he led the team and how he treated me.
“He’d tell me, ‘Cris, relax and just play your game – you are the one who is going to make the difference. He was always honest with me and that’s why I’ll always have a real affection for him.”

Zidane has since returned to Real Madrid as manager following a string of sub-par results last season under various coaches.

As for Ronaldo, he is enjoying life in the Serie A, having netted 21 times in his first season in Italy.

Ronaldo’s goals also helped Juventus seal another Scudetto and he will hope for an encore this time around.
