Liverpool legend and former defender Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to make a move for Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt.
De Ligt’s rise to the top of European football has been startling. Despite being just 19, he is already the captain of Ajax’s side.
He put in some stellar displays to help the Dutch giants make the semifinals of the Champions League, upsetting the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.
Matthijs De Ligt to join link up with Van Dijk at Anfield?
His performances have meant he’s constantly being linked with an exit. Now, former Liverpool defender Carragher feels he would be a perfect fit at the Reds.
A potential partnership between De Ligt and Virgil Van Dijk would be quite menacing for oppositions to try and deal with.
Carragher revealed that he would love to see De Ligt at Liverpool. He also added that he has never seen such a young defender exhibit so much talent.
“I have never seen such a good defender at 19-years-old. He plays as if he’s 29 and at his peak already.
“You can only imagine how good he will be when he actually is 29.”
Future remains uncertain
De Ligt has been linked with a number of clubs. Barcelona remain his most likely destination. If that were the case, he would link up with current teammate Frenkie de Jong, who signed for the Catalans earlier this year.
However, he still might be tempted by a move to England. If Liverpool can win the Champions League, the 19-year-old will surely have to consider a move to Anfield as well.
He has already expressed his admiration for Van Dijk in the past and the chance to play alongside one of his idols might be one too good to pass up.
“It could happen (a move to Anfield). He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them.
“I focus on Ajax and then I’ll see where I end up.”
