Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hailed the Red Devils’ new signing Harry Maguire for his phenomenal display against Chelsea.
Maguire made more tackles, blocks and interceptions than any other United player on the night. His stellar performance ensured Chelsea could not get on the scoresheet and also earned him the Man of the Match award on his United debut.
Harry Maguire lives up to £80m price tag
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to sign Maguire for a whopping £80m fee from Leicester in the summer came under heavy scrutiny.
However, the move appears to have been a masterstroke as the England defender has settled into the United backline with ease.
Former manager Mourinho has now hailed Maguire’s performance, stating that he was solid as a rock and can be the game-changer for United going forward.
“He fully deserved the award, he was solid like a rock. You can be very dangerous in attack but if you feel that a mistake is around the corner it takes your confidence away and you don’t play as well. When you feel there is something that allows you to play you are much more confident.
“As I always said Lindelof can be a very good player. With Maguire it can be a very good partnership.”
United started off rather tentatively, but settled down after Marcus Rashford’s opener midway through the first half.
They absolutely bossed the second half and goals from Anthony Martial, Rashford and Daniel James ensured a lopsided 4-0 thrashing of Frank Lampard’s Blues.
United still not contenders this season, feels Mourinho
Despite the win, Mourinho does not feel United have the quality in the side to compete for the title this season.
When quizzed about who he believes will win the title, Mourinho named four contenders: Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester City ‘B’.
