Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of former midfielder Edu as the club’s technical director. Edu will return to the club with which he won two Premier League titles and two FA Cup crowns.
Edu previously served as a general co-ordinator for the Brazilian national team, but leaves his post following the nation’s triumph at the recently-concluded Copa America.
He has been linked with a return to Arsenal for several years although no official contact was made.
Edu to link up with Unai Emery once again
Interestingly enough, Edu played under Arsenal’s current manager Unai Emery during his days in Valencia.
Edu will link up with the Gunners first-team squad during their pre-season tour of the USA.
Arsenal released a statement on their website confirming the appointment of Edu.
“In his role as technical director, Edu will co-ordinate the work of our first-team coaching group, the academy and player scouting and recruitment in order to oversee the constant building up and efficient strengthening of our squad.”
“I’m thrilled to be returning to this great club”
Edu, meanwhile, expressed his delight at returning to the club where he truly made his name. He was a part of the Invincibles side that went an entire Premier League season unbeaten.
“Arsenal has always had a special place in my heart and I’m thrilled to be returning to this great club in this new role. We have a strong squad and some very talented young players with fantastic people at every level. I’m looking forward to helping make a difference.”
The Gunners have had plenty of reshuffling going on this summer. Earlier this year, Freddie Ljungberg was promoted to assistant coach, replacing Steve Bould.
They have also been active in the transfer window although they are yet to make a big-name signing.
However, players like Wilfried Zaha, Malcom and Kieran Tierney are being heavily linked with a move to the Emirates. It remains to be seen how many of these targets Arsenal end up signing.
