Iker Casillas may never play football again, according to Porto doctor

Real Madrid legend and current Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas might never return to the football field again, if reports are to be believed.

Casillas suffered a heart attack during a training session with Porto yesterday. He was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery.

He has since been declared out of any immediate danger. Casillas too took to social media to provide an update about his condition and thank fans for their support.

Casillas recovering, but may never play again

However, now, according to his doctor, it is uncertain if the Spaniard will ever return to competitive football again.

Porto club doctor Nelson Puga said that Casillas’ return would depend on a number of factors.

“It will depend on the medication that he will need to take. on the evaluation of the physical demands of his profession, and also on his will to keep playing.”

“Only after carefully taking all that into consideration will it be possible to decide whether he will continue, and whether he wants to continue.”

However, he did reveal that the former Real Madrid keeper is well on the road to recovery.

“He is stable and accompanied by his family. with his characteristic good humour and calmness. He is now starting to take the first steps to a perfect recovery. we are almost certain he will do that.”

Casillas joined Porto from Real Madrid in the summer of 2015. He has since won two trophies with the Portuguese giants and remains a fan favourite.

What’s next for the Real Madrid legend?

He recently signed a contract extension as well, keeping him at the club till 2019/2020.

It remains to be seen if the legendary keeper ever returns to competitive football. However, if he doesn’t he has left behind a legacy that will last the test of time. If he does indeed bow out, it will be as one of the greatest keepers of all time.
