Inter Milan have confirmed that star striker and former captain Mauro Icardi has been released from pre-season training and will not return to the squad for their tour of Asia.
Icardi is set to train alone in Milan as rumours of his exit continue to swirl. The Argentine refused to sign a new contract with the club last year and was dropped from the squad after a falling out with the board.
Inter CEO Marotta confirmed earlier this summer that both Icardi and Radja Nainggolan would be sold in this window.
“Nainggolan and Icardi? We need clarity and transparency. They’re great players and talent, but it’s not enough.
“They are not part of our project, I say this with transparency and respect. Icardi is on the market. But we respect the contractual agreements.”
Now, following his release from pre-season training, it appears he is set to make good on his word.
The club released a statement earlier today confirming the same:
“Mauro Icardi will today return to Milan from our training camp in Lugano. The club and the striker have come to this decision by mutual agreement.
“Icardi will continue his pre-season training over the next few days and will take no part in our summer tour in Asia.”
Icardi has been linked with moves to Juventus and even Manchester United. However, no formal approaches have been made by either club.
Meanwhile, the Serie A side are already lining up his replacement. Inter officials reportedly met with Manchester United earlier this week in an attempt to complete a move for underfire striker Romelu Lukaku.
However, the two clubs do not see eye to eye in terms of valuation of the Belgian and it remains to be seen if a deal comes to fruition.
