Manchester United suffer massive blow in pursuit of £60m-rated PL defender

Manchester United have already suffered a blow to their plans of a massive summer overhaul of their squad. According to reports, the Red Devils’ £40m bid for Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been rejected by the club.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed at the end of this past season that a number of players would be offloaded in the summer.

These are widely believed to include the likes of Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Ashley Young and a number of others.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka United’s primary summer target

This would leave United well short on defensive options, especially at right back. As a result, Solskjaer is believed to have set his sights on Palace starlet Wan-Bissaka.

The 21-year-old had a breakout season in the Palace backline, making 35 appearances in the league. He also chipped in with three assists and was arguably one of Palace’s best players over the course of the season.

Consequently, he has attracted the attention of a slew of top-tier clubs in Europe, including Manchester United.

Crystal Palace holding out for at least £60m

However, reports indicate Crystal Palace have rejected United’s initial bid of £40m. They value their prized asset at close to £60m and are willing to play hardball.

It does seem that £60m for a player who has not yet made his mark at a top-level club is a little steep, however, Palace have all the bargaining chips in their hands considering Wan-Bissaka still has three years left on his current contract.

What’s next for the Red Devils?

United are expected to return with an improved offer. However, it’s unlikely to be in the range of £60.

The Red Devils are also rumoured to be in the race to sign both Kieran Trippier and Thomas Meunier. If they miss out on securing Wan-Bissaka’s services, they could step up their pursuit of both those aforementioned players.

Either way, it looks like a busy summer awaits the Old Trafford faithful.
