Neves screamer, Pogba penalty miss ensure United held to 1-1 draw by Wolves

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium on Monday, fluffing the opportunity to move to the top of the table.

United named a strong starting lineup for the clash and started strongly, dominating proceedings from the get-go.

They were rewarded for their attacking intent, Anthony Martial scoring just before the half-hour mark.

The Red Devils continued to dominate possession for the rest of the half, but could not add to their tally in the first period.

Wolves emerged from the break rejuvenated and looking for an equaliser. Adama Traore was introduced for Matt Doherty and his arrival made a world of difference as he ran Luke Shaw ragged on the flank.

Ruben Neves screamer stuns Manchester United

With Wolves looking increasingly threatening, United were forced deeper into their own half and they eventually paid for it.

A cleverly-worked corner found its way to Ruben Neves on the edge of the United box. The Portuguese then unleashed an absolute screamer, curling the ball past David De Gea in goal and into the far corner of the net.

Paul Pogba fluffs his lines

Wolves began to look for the kill, but almost paid for their gung-ho approach as Conor Coady upended Paul Pogba in the box, conceding a penalty.

Marcus Rashford netted from the spot against Chelsea last week, but surprisingly opted to let Pogba step up this time around.

Much to United’s horror, the Frenchman’s powerful penalty was palmed away by Rui Patricio.

That would prove to be the final clear-cut opportunity in the game as both sides settled for a point apiece.

The result also means United have failed to win at the Molineux in their last three attempts.

Following the conclusion of the game, Gary Neville expressed his disgust at Pogba stepping up to take the penalty in place of Rashford.

“I think Pogba might be the penalty taker here and Rashford took it off him last week. That’s then caused a problem this week. It isn’t right. We don’t come on air tonight and ask each other which pieces of analysis we’re doing. We decide before we come on.
“They should decide in the dressing room. It’s embarrassing. This is a Manchester United penalty. This isn’t a tombola. This is not under-fives football on the playground.”

United host Crystal Palace in their next Premier League while Wolves travel to Torino for a Europa League fixture.
