Manchester United are set for a massive summer rebuilding project after a disappointing 2018/19 season.
While a number of first-team stars are expected to be shown the door, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly already drawn up his list of top targets.
Solskjaer confident Juan Mata will remain at Old Trafford
However, one man Solskjaer wants to see remain at Old Trafford is Spaniard Juan Mata. Mata’s contract runs down at the end of the season. As a result, if he is shooting for a move away, United would have to part with him for free.
He is also free to talk to clubs if he wishes to. Despite that though, Solskjaer is confident that the midfielder’s future is at Old Trafford.
Mata held in high regard
The Norwegian is also fairly positive that Mata will sign a new long-term contract with the club. Solskjaer revealed that he has spoken to Mata about his future, stressing his importance in the team’s set-up.
“He’s a fantastic person and a fantastic player. It’s up to him. I’ve had words with him and he knows how highly I regard him.
“I was so pleased for him last week; it would have been so much nicer for him to sit there and talk about Juan scoring the winning goal against Chelsea.
“He’s a top pro and let’s see if they manage to agree.”
Mata has had a fairly decent season by his standards. While he has not been a regular part of the first-team, his contributions when called upon have been praiseworthy.
If indeed the Spaniard has his heart set on a move away from England, there are a number of teams willing to snap him up in the summer.
As of now, it remains to be seen where the former Chelsea midfielder ends up next season.
