Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has quashed rumours linking him with a summer exit, stating that it’s his dream to retire at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ramos endured a tumultuous season with Madrid, struggling at the heart of the defence. His failure to inspire his troops resulted in a shock third place finish in La Liga and an early exit from the Champions League.
Rumours also surfaced suggesting that all was not well between Ramos and club president Florentino Perez.
It was also believed that the Spaniard was keen on a move to either the Premier League or China in the summer. He was also believed to have asked for a free transfer as an unnamed club from China could not afford to pay his transfer fee.
Sergio Ramos denies Madrid exit rumours
However, all those reports have now proven to be false. Ramos himself has explained that he would love to stay at Madrid until the end of his career and that he has no intentions of leaving any time soon.
“It is true that I have an offer from China on the table, I will not lie about it. My dream is to retire here. At no moment did I consider going to China.
“Yesterday I went to see the president to make everything clear. I told the president that I would never go to a team that could compete with Real Madrid.
“I am the captain of Real Madrid and I feel very loved and supported by my team-mates. I’m not looking to renew [my contract]. I am happy with what I have. People always think it’s a strategy to earn more, but it’s the opposite.”
Ramos has been at the club since 2005, playing an instrumental role in numerous Champions League and other cup triumphs. However, his form seems to be fading and his contract runs out in 2021.
It remains to be seen whether Madrid are willing to offer him an extension down the line.
