Former Barcelona striker Rivaldo has revealed that Argentine ace Lionel Messi deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

Messi has had another stellar year from a personal point of view. The little magician netted 51 times in all competitions, leading Barcelona to the Spanish league title.

He also claimed the Pichichi award as well as the European Golden Shoe for his exploits. However, despite his best efforts, he could not lead Barcelona to European success as they crashed out of the Champions League in the semifinal stage at the hands of Liverpool.

Rivaldo backs Lionel Messi for Ballon d’Or glory

He also struggled to make an impact in the recently concluded Copa America campaign. Messi looked a shadow of his usual self and failed to propel his side to glory.

Despite that, Rivaldo believes Messi should beat off competition from the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

“In my opinion, the Ballon d’Or of this season is Messi for what he has done. He didn’t win the Champions League, but because it is an individual prize he scored a lot of goals, important goals.”

The Argentine has won five Ballon d’Or award already and can break his tie with Ronaldo if he wins it again this year.

Rivaldo also went on to state that Messi and Ronaldo are the greatest in the world and their rivalry is one for the ages.

“Messi always makes the difference at Barcelona and Ronaldo at every club and the national team – Juventus and Portugal.

“It’s going to be thrilling again. When you talk about them it’s for something good, they both score so many goals.”

Luka Modric broke the Messi-Ronaldo stranglehold on the Ballon d’Or by lifting the trophy in 2018. This year, Liverpool defender Van Dijk is the favourite for the award although thing can change by the end of 2019.
