Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has revealed that Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo spoke to him regarding a potential move to the Old Lady.
Portugal squared off against the Netherlands in the final of the UEFA Nations League last night in a cracking encounter.
Both de Ligt and Ronaldo featured in the game which was eventually won by Portugal courtesy a goal from Goncalo Guedes.
Ronaldo urges Matthijs de Ligt to sign for Juventus
After the game though, Ronaldo approached de Ligt and spoke to him, apparently asking the Ajax defender if he was interested in a move to Juventus.
De Ligt has caught the attention of several top European clubs after stellar displays for Ajax this past season.
As captain of the side, he led them to the semifinals of the Champions League as well as a domestic double. He has been widely linked with a move to Barcelona and even PSG, but as of right now, his future destination remains uncertain.
De Ligt yet to make a decision on his future
De Ligt was part of the Ajax side that knocked Ronaldo’s Juventus out of the Champions League and it appears the Portuguese talisman is a fan of the young defender.
Speaking after the game, the 19-year-old said:
“I didn’t understand him at first. I was a little shocked, so I laughed. But I didn’t say anything.”
“So soon after the game you are not at all concerned with it. You are disappointed that you have lost. that is the only thing you are thinking about.”
“I don’t mind that. The transfer period starts in a while. so I will first go on a nice vacation and rest. I will let it happen and then I will see.”
The defender is expected to make a decision on his future in the coming weeks. While the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and even Manchester United are keen on signing de Ligt, other clubs like Juventus and PSG have the financial muscle to make a move as well.
